The pain clinic model was very forward thinking, but it started to disappear. It became increasingly difficult to sustain in an era of cost containment. The emergence at the federal level with a sense that the market could solve our problems far better than government could led to mid boggling new policies. We released some new opioids into the market before we could learn much about their effects.
