What Is the Academic Concept of Collectivism?

Eric Liu: The academic conceptualization of collectivism is too naive about the reality of what it's like. He says when he started out as a young researcher at Michigan, people kind of clued him in. They told him not to use self report scales and questionnaires for research across cultures. Liu: People tell me that they didn't work sort of secretly. There are cultures out there that we sort of think are collectivistic but really aren't.
