He was an up-and-comer at the time he'd been working pretty steadily since the mid 80s as a stand-up and theater actor while also breaking into film and television. The roles he would most become known for had not happened yet in his career but it made perfect sense that mario bros themselves should be this contemporary unconventional family so they couldn't be pegged as one thing or the other.
