The Dread of a Serial Killer
This is a short story by Flannery O'Connor, one of the classic 20th century short stories. The thing that works about this is how effectively it's written and that's why I wanted to start talking about it with the tone. It actually functions in a short story way differently than I think a lot of her stories do. And what's really funny is that this short story features a detective, but it is not detective fiction. This is crime fiction.
