The Meiji Restoration

Meiji was the new rain name of the emperor. It's a little bit like the reign, the title that you give to a particular period for a Western monarch. The difference being that each Japanese monarch would get a different title rather like a Chinese emperor for their own personal reign. Instead of having essentially a regency form of government Japan begins to develop constitutional government drawing from France and Germany. In other words it very consciously says we're no longer a pre-modern empire but an imperial state.
