Athens, the Beginning of Democracy

In ancient athens, debate and argumentation is a root to power. The better you are at arguing, the better you can persuade other people. Sophists were only concerned with teaching skills - they separated technology from any kind of moral commitment. What mattered was emowering the individual to win the argument. Now how does this work? And how can we relate it to our lives?
