In both cases, what's missing is some imputed essence or independent existence. The idea of emptiness to me is the best metaphor is the metaphor of words in a dictionary. Every word in a dictionary, if you try to define the word, it is defined using other words. This is a network of relationships that can only exist because of all the relationship. Nothing breaks out of that network and finds itself embedded in a deeper ground.
