The french system was designed to have a strong, autocratic monarch. The french people had an enormous amount of hope for louis the sixteenth. Historian charlet matthews describes these hopes as follows. It was universally believed that this clumsy, conscientious, stupid young man and his beautiful wife were to introduce a period of national prosperity such as france had not known since the early days of louis the fourteenth. Louis the sixteenth was meant to usher in a new golden age.
