The word umbrella is a combination of early greek and latin words. It was back in the eighteenth century that we started to see the metal, spoked versions of the umbrella. These clumsy contraptions were really, really sketchy back in the 17 hundreds. If one of those suckers malfunctioned you could genuinely seriously injure somebody.
