The History of the Byzantine Empire

When victory was achieved the Emperor Anastasius awarded Clovis the title of consul as reward for ridding nominally Roman lands of their heretical Visigothic rulers. This is an important point for the future of the Byzantines. The idea that two people who both held quote correct Christian faith should cooperate with one another was coming to be seen as an important factor in diplomatic cooperation. We'll leave France there and move south into Spain and Portugal which of course knew no such distinction during Roman times.
