Most mammals, reptiles and amphibia have evolved another olfactory system. It's called the Vomeronasal Organ - but humans don't have it. The receptors there are tuned very finely to detect only a single chemical. But we do know now that some volatile airborne pheromones can be detected through the main olfactorysystem.
