The Spartan System
The Spartan system meant to instill discipline first and foremost, as well as self-reliance. Even at the age of 30, a Spartan man was now no less at the beck and call of the state than he had been as a boy. A coward in the rest of Greece lived much differently than one in Sparta. Since Marshal Valor offered the sole path to honor and respect of one's peers, those who were unable to cope with the rigors of military life,. Those who lost their status, lived a wretched, intolerable life afterwards.
