The Dislocation Between What Adults Tell You and What You're Feeling

When you're eight years old and watching your parents drive away, how does a child process that? Well, I think inevitably you process it in the way that adults tell you you should process it. So very early on, there's this sense of a dislocation between what you're being told by responsible adults and what you're actually feeling. The response to that is to repress the feelings. But it also makes anyone who goes through that process very suspicious of anybody's motives in the future - especially when people are telling you something is good for you.
