The Importance of Membership in the Conservative Party
The membership of any big political party in this country has the least formal influence over policy. William Hay gave those members the right to select the leader and therefore anyone jockeying for position in the Conservative party always have now one eye on the membership. If the membership has a particularly you know for want of a better world extreme view it is very tempting I think for for an ambitious MP to play to that.
