Ruth Ben-Ghiat: I have to tell you, when she offered over the period of the six weeks to meet with me, and if you will, train me, but I actually had some concerns even about showing up. She taught me a technique that now we would call a body survey and a breathing technique. This was in 1968. terms like mindfulness or meditation or neuroplasticity were certainly not commonly used at all. And after a few weeks of doing this practice, I felt in some ways much calmer.
