The Importance of Access to Computing Hardware in AI
There's only a handful of leading AI labs at the moment, OpenAI, Google DeepMind and Anthropic. Most of them are backed by tech companies, pretty deep pockets. There may be 18 months or so behind the leading edge but these systems proliferate very quickly. And that means that they're inherently dual use, kind of like how nuclear power is beneficial uses for civilian nuclear reactors, but also can be used for nuclear weapons.
