The Tension Between Fatalism and Free Will

Marcus Aurelius was a Stoic philosopher who believed in fate and free will. He argued that we can choose to live virtuously or conform our lives to the will of nature. But if all existence is a single, simultaneously occurring event, where does free will enter the picture? Is that before or after everything that happens already happened?
