Jefferson's Critique of Slavery
For Jefferson it was very important to condemn slavery and also to blame the British for the slave trade. South Carolina and Georgia said we won't sign the Declaration of Independence if you keep that paragraph condemning slavery in it. And so the negotiation as it were included losing that in order to keep the United States united. So in that sense, Jefferson was a radical in Virginia slave holding society.
