Work Equals Force Times Distance
The law of the lever, proposed by archimedes, is that magnitudes are in equilibrium at distances reciprocally proportional to their weights. The way this works is, depending on what side is longer, that's going to travel more distance and apply less force. This is why you have the famous, possibly apocryphal quote that archimedes said, if he had a lever long enough, he could move the world.
