The Scope of Biblical Books
The term scope became commonplace among English expositors from the middle of the 16th until the end of the 19th centuries. It's not like binoculars, it's what you see with your spotting scopes. Another way that it's been described is as a magnetic compass which always points to north. Jim Boulden: We use the word for bird watching and we're turning this around from the contemporary understanding in our book.
