In the U.S., both parties were aligned in a kind of tacit agreement to ignore the demographic issue, he says. And so there really was no voice for people who had what I call 'demographic conservatives' In France, political issues is much more different because their immigration came alongside the Algerian War and huge amounts of political violence and instability in the 60s. UKIP's rise was basically over immigration especially from the Islamic world; it was able to disguise that behind opposition to EU.
