The Importance of Thinking Like a Gardener
I want to share my experience in the context of some work I've been doing with an organization called Atran Foundation. Atran Foundation works with young adults in low-income communities and helps unlock their potential by giving them aspiration, teaching them life skills. There's no reason to believe that a bright kid in the slums of therapy is not as capable as somebody going to a posh school in Mumbai.

Stephen M. R. Covey is an American writer and public speaker and the author of the books: The SPEED of Trust, Smart Trust, and Trust & Inspire: How Truly Great Leaders Unleash the Greatness in Others. He is the co-founder and CEO of a company called CoveyLink Worldwide and former President and CEO of Covey Leadership Center. He happens to be the son of Stephen Covey, the author of the pathbreaking book - 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
In our conversation, we spoke about how Stephen broke away from his father’s shadows and created an identity for himself over time as a thought leader by building credibility on the business front. We spoke at length about his recent book - Trust and Inspire. I loved his distinction around being Trust and Inspire in Paradigm but Command and Control in the moment. He also speaks about “Enlightened Command and Control” which gives people a false sense of having evolved their leadership style. Highly relevant piece of work in this world of complexity and possibility.
