Is This a Bid for Mid-Season Trades or Mentoring and Veteran Leadership?

The Oakland A's have brought in a number of veterans to bolster their team. Is this more about respectability or is it about mentoring and veteran leadership? I don't think the way that they were just non-competitive in a good amount of games and series last year sat well with with people in the organization so there was some strategy behind it.
