In the real world, we're always going to be motivated by things that are easily mechanically measurable at scale. Games and game like systems as instantiated in the real world require tracking something that's easy to count mechanically. That means that the more we're motivated by things counted by technology, the less we're going to pay attention to that kind of stuff. The modern scientific life is one with very low intellectual autonomy. Just like in a game, the capacities you're given are just the right capacities to get over the obstacles in the game.
