What Does Being Fully Engaged in Pastoral Work Bring to Your Scholarship?

Being fully involved in the pastoral work, what does that bring to your scholarship that you wouldn't have otherwise? I think some people feel like there's a tension. To me, the two are living with one or the other all the time. The church is always exercised to say, I have an argument for why there's there. And yeah, I make connections in pastoral work that I wouldn't have just made in scholarship.
