She found an engagement ring to suit her that a fancy jeweler's off Grafton Street. But it was loose on her finger and had to be resized. He took her outside to the street then saying that they should refuse to pay this extra charge. She insisted she told him about the additional cost. Do you think I made a money? he said. And immediately felt the long shadow of his father's words crossing over his life, if not one of his happiest days.
