The Pleasure Principle

Aptitude for happiness doesn't mean a guarantee, it means just that it is possible and within rich. The vignettes all start with a walk on the beach, a metaphor for our walk through life. It might seem that happiness is the possibility to fulfill our wishes but psychic life is not so simple. As long as there is life, the instinctual drive is there to push us ahead. In this sense, desire has an affirmative dimension and adds to the pleasure of being alive. We don't desire only what is absent, missing, or what we lack.
