The Influence of Missus Beaton on British Cooking
Missus beaton's book of household management had a powerful influence british cooking for decades. It is thought that in the 19 thirties, her book was still being used in almost half of the households in britain. The second world war brought with it an additional factor which would mark british eating for decades afterwards: austerity and food rationing. For example, my father will talk of his childhood favourite of his called corned beef hash - made out of argentinian tinned beef but mainly consisting of potatoes. There's a reason you will struggle to find it in a modern british restaurant, because, well, it's not very nice.
