The Red Army in Poland
Civil society had utterly collapsed and there were virtually no functional institutions left in Poland. He remembered a Polish POW camp where the gates were open and the guards had long abandoned their posts but these brutalized prisoners refused to come out because nobody had given them the order to do so. The first, properly German town, encountered by the Red Army was a small one in East Prussia called Nemersdorf. Despite attempts by local officials to suppress panic and defeatism, it was no secret to most people by now that the war was just about over.
