Unwell Women: A Journey Through Medicine and Myth in a Man-Made World

In 1967, two women were killed by grizzly bears in bear country. The National Park Service and the US Forest Service issued warnings that menstruating women are more vulnerable to being attacked because of menstrual fluid. This attitude to menstrual blood didn't just appear in the 60s; there's a long history of fear and disgust over menstrual fluid. We're going to return to Caroline's own story in a bit, but first we need to go back to the origin of some of these myths, to the late middle ages.
