Flood Geology of the Coconino Sandstone Formation
Geologists interpret bedding structures and small animal tracks in the rock layers as representing an ancient sand dune desert environment. Sand particles appear to have been transported by rivers to the place of deposition from a source of older rock some 600 miles to the west and north, in present day utah and wyoming.
