The Real Danger in Artificial Consciousness
We don't know what it would take to build a conscious machine, but we don't know enough to rule it out. The only way to answer that question is to discover more about the nature of consciousness in those examples that we know have it. That will allow us to make more informed judgments. I actually think a more short term danger is that we will develop systems that give the strong appearance of being conscious, even if have no good reason to believe they actually are.
