Water is constantly being pumped by TEPCO through the reactors to keep them cool, which prevents meltdowns or explosions from happening. This has resulted in 1.3 million tons of water accumulating in around 1,000 stainless steel tanks. So that quantity is equivalent to roughly 500 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
