Stallin's paranoia was driven partly by an intense feeling of perpetual victimization. Stallman also came ready equipped, just as lennon did, with the personality of a bully. When he saw people backing down, he didn't take that as a time to let up, but instead to go harder. It wasn't enough to beat your enemies. You had to degrade them, humiliate them and ruin them and then destroy them.
