The Buddha spent seven weeks sitting under and around the Bodhi tree in Bhoghaya contemplating different aspects of his enlightenment, his awakening. And then he started wondering who might understand these very profound teachings of liberation? And he thought of the five ascetics with whom he had practiced the austerities in the previous years. And he realized that their minds would be fertile ground for the teachings,. That they really had the potential to understand them. This concept of self, as we know, is very strong. So what insights help us to cut through this deeply ingrained attachment, these deeply habituated patterns of clinging?
