The Impact of Mary Barton on Southern Readers
Mary Barton is in some ways a more shocking novel. So it has that kind of immediate punch. North and South was easier for those who were used to a traditional romance plot. Elizabeth Gaskell gives an authenticity to the voices. She knew the people that she was writing about on an intimate, long-term basis. As many of those who had previously tried to address these issues were, she worked there. It makes a huge difference to the basis on which she can describe those lives.
