CHAPTER

The Benefits of Freediving

Olympic athletes are getting into freediving as a way to enhance performance, particularly because of the red blood cell production. The spleen was like this redundant organ that kind of shared the liver's function of destroying old red blood cells in the liver. It actually has this secondary function because huge volumes of blood circulate through it and when you compress it, you get this big release of red blood cells. Other benefits include the mammalian dive reflex, the vagus nerve, and just the enjoyment that comes out of being in the water.
