CHAPTER

The History of Science in the Early 20th Century

The scale of the bombing with one bomb, in the case of Hiroshima, was not that different from the scale of the fire bombings that had proceeded it with tens of thousands of bombs. In fact, the people in Hiroshima didn't even bother to go into their bomb shelters because they didn't see any reason to hide or protect themselves. I think until you get to the hydrogen bomb, it's really an escalating gradient. The biggest one ever tested was 56 million tons of TNT equivalent, 56 megatons. That's really an order of magnitude change.
