Discovery in 1970s completely transformed our understanding of upright walking and showed that it developed very early in our evolution much earlier than scientists have thought. Laitoli was an unexpected discovery and it came at a time when paleoanthropology discoveries were being made across East Africa, shaking up what scientists thought they knew about our origin story.
