Gullah culture is still pretty misunderstood and unknown in the US, especially outside of the Southeast. Gullah culture has always been about finding ways to integrate traditional African practices into Christianity. And if you've ever driven down like Route 17 going into Charleston, especially talking 30 years ago, basket makers would still be on the sides of the road selling like homemade baskets. That seems so out of place in conventional modern America.
