For a long time, post-Galeo was to think of the other planets as much more Earth-like than they actually are. Venus is covered in a layer of clouds, so you can't actually see its features, even using a good telescope. There was this sort of wishful thinking that we were figuring things out that we really didn't have the information to figure out. Then comes the end of World War II, and the decision by the world's two superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union, that it is time for humans to rock it up away from Earth.
