CHAPTER

What Is Consciousness?

Dennett: Consciousness is a kind of internal communication between different parts of the brain. He says there must have been a time when peasont spoke to themselves, and they asked a question which was answered by another part of their brain. And that internal process is what we call consciousness, or self awareness. In his essay concerning humen's inqiry concerning human understanding, Dennet discusses how something worth calling consciousness could arise - even if you don't think there is a self to be conscious.
