Akyne Sisi-Vahua Bik was born and raised in Puyvintuk, a village of some 2,000 people on the east side of Hudson Bay. She learned from her grandmother, who helped to revive the tradition after it was banned by missionaries in the 17th and 18th centuries. Inuit people have lived here for at least a thousand years; road singing is a form of a game where two women are singing together.
