When you were growing up in Los Angeles, public school was a place where everyone went. You had friends whose parents were prostitutes and people who lived in the middle class. It's really the last moment in this city's history where you had that kind of full integration in the public school system. I wonder whether it's connected to the kind of art that was coming out of the schools at that time.
