The Complexity of Perception
We have this impression that the world is just there and it pours itself into our minds. We don't, and we can't experience things exactly as they are. This point goes back to Emmanuelle Canton and even earlier. There is an objective reality. But the way we experience them is never as they really are. It's always an interpretation, always a construction. The brain is always making predictions about what's out there in the world or in here in the body. Our sensory data is there mainly to keep these perceptual predictions tuned to the world in useful ways.
