The Importance of Ending a Therapeutic Relationship
All of our codes of ethics say that at least in the short term, a sexual or romantic relationship with a former client is expressly prohibited. And for that reason, the burden of proof remains on the clinician to prove that such a relationship was not harmful to the former client. Even if you take the ethical standard out of it, there's risk for the client that they are going to misunderstand what therapy is about. So we should be cautious about those as well.
