When you say it's specifically in support of the ground it's almost like the doctrine of mobile flying artillery. What happened in World War II was that things kind of didn't work out the way they were supposed to. The Marine fighter squadrons or fighting squadrons were wound up being the allied air superiority force. They were analogous to the RAF and the Battle of Britain.
