The Importance of Colonies in the Second Sammnight War
Colonies place, as you say, a permanent Roman presence in strategic areas. They come in various shapes and sizes of legal statuses. Sometimes they're just a few hundred people, and they park in an existing community. Other thing that colonies do is act as a vector for the spread of Roman culture. The problem with colonization is that there's been a vast sea change in how scholars understand it.
