He was a marine pilot before the war he resigned from the marine court well let's back up a little bit of course you know went to went to uh china say he was an old air corps guy after he retired went to china to build their air force. He came up with this idea where the pilots would resign from the services and um become civilian contractors flying for  a chinese holding company they called it the american volunteer group but somehow they came to be called the flying tigers. Boington always claimed to have shot down six japanese airplanes while flying with the flying tigers now the flying tigers records don't agree with that when you read his his famous memoir bob bob
