How to Tell if Sounds Are Above You or Below You

For an owl, the loudness of a sound in both ears depends on whether it comes from above or below. Unlike us, owls can use timing and level differences for high frequency sounds like squeaking mice. But what about humans? Our ears don't point up and down, so how do we tell if sounds are above us or below? To find out, we're heading to an auditory arena in the north of England where barn owls are pitted against humans.
